Jennifer's Body (2009)

Verdict:  6/10

Jennifer's Body is directed by Karyn Kusama & written by Oscar winning Screenwriter Diablo Cody. Cody won the Oscar for one of my favourites Juno. The movie stars Megan Fox & Amanda Seyfried in the lead roles. Johnny Simmons, Adam Brody, J.K.Simmons among others are in the supporting roles.

The movie is a comedy thriller set in the high school background. Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) is the high school hottie who although behaves very confident from outside, is actually a very insecure person. Her best friend from childhood is Anita "Needy" Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried) who is the quintessential gawky, nerdy student typically present in every high school movie. One day Jennifer takes Needy to a rock show by a minor band. After a big fire accident, the rock band under the impression that Jennifer is a virgin takes her with them, offers her as a sacrifice to Satan in exchange for fame & money.

The sacrifice is a success for the band but since Jennifer is actually not a virgin, the devil embodies her & she becomes a blood thirsty brute. How Jennifer satiates herself by eating young men who are easy prey for her beauty & how Needy finally confronts her when Jennifer targets Needy's boyfriend Chip (Johnny Simmons) forms the rest of the movie.

The movie is definitely targeted towards the young male crowd. Seeing the immense popularity of Twilight with the female teens, the producers would have thought why not make such a movie for the boys. Who better than Megan Fox to pull the targeted crowds towards the film?

Contrary to the abysmal acting that generally accompanies most of the movies in this genre, Jennifer's body has pretty decent performances. Although Megan Fox plays the title role, the main protagonist of the movie is Amanda Seyfried. She gives good performance & has a lot of potential. All the supporting cast are good. This is the first lead role for Megan Fox. Although she was not exceptional, she did surprise me. She has more to her than the oomph factor.

Cody's stamp of writing is very visible throughout the film. There is a lot of black humour regarding the current society's supposed moral standards & conventions.

The art work & cinematography are decent. Music is given a lot of significance in the movie. A lot of heavy rock is used & it suits well for the young audience. Visual Effects are good. Infact for its budget, the movie was very well made technically.

Jennifer's Body has a thriller tag to it but has no scares at all. With a decent story, performances & technical factors, this is what I call a harmless timepass fun movie.

p.s. For any Alien diehards present, there is a very brief appearance at the end by Lance Henrikson a.k.a Bishop.
